It is a children's film in the spirit of Hayao Miyazaki's previous film, The Castle of Cagliostro, and features the same characters and themes, such as dream, toy, and the concept of "returning" to nature. The film is based on a short story by Matsuo Bashō (, 17th-century Japanese haiku poet) called published in Bashō's seventeenth book of haiku (1716). The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards, making it the first anime feature to receive the award. The film had originally been scheduled to receive the award on its own, but it was considered ineligible due to its being the first feature-length animated film to be nominated. This was because the eligibility period for the Academy Awards only considered animated films released in the calendar year of nomination. Studio Ghibli had produced their first film, Grave of the Fireflies, in 1988, but its only known release was in 1985. Plot Set in post-World War II Japan, an unnamed boy wakes up to find a forest inhabited by anthropomorphic creatures living in a dense mountain forest. The film begins with the child's father, his three friends, and their dog all playing with a cat. One of the friends explains that the cat's playful antics attract Totoro, a playful woodland spirit who resembles a bear. Totoro is seen playing with the children by playing a game with them, hiding and then attacking a tree. The children and the others play with Totoro before the children return to their home to share a story with their parents. Later, as the children play with their dog, it is attacked by a fox and stumbles into the woods. While exploring the forest, the dog runs into another of Totoro's friends, a walrus. The children's parents take them home. The next day, as they play with their dog on the roof, the children talk about the various creatures they have seen in the forest. When their father returns home for lunch, he is surprised to find his son and two friends outside. He invites the children in to eat, and they play with the dog before returning to the forest to continue playing. The father returns home and brings them to the neighbor's house, where his wife and three children are waiting.
